Social Action
As Unitarian Universalists (UUs), we covenant to work for a democratic, peaceful, equitable and earth-friendly world. Our UU seven principles encourage us to participate in social programs within our community and beyond:
- The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
- Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
- Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
- A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
- The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
- The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
- Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
CUUC Spends Quality Time with Habitat for Humanity
On Saturday, March 24, about 10 members of CUUC spent the day building new homes for Tri-City families. The group teamed with other members of the community to support Habitat for Humanity. From digging foundation footings to framing to sheetrock quality inspections, this group worked hard--and enjoyed every minute of it!
Tri-Citians Come Together to Stop Hate
In early March, a local Tri-Citian came home as a casulty of war. The saddened community pulled together to form a line to protect the family and friends of the deceased from a group of folks planning to protest at the memorial service with messages of hate. Members of CUUC stood proud with our fellow community members to stop hate and honor Marine Sergeant Travis Pfister.
Maggie Anderson Fundraising Project
Maggie Anderson, daughter of Rich Anderson and Bridget Trenkle of Kennewick, Washington, was injured December 28, 2003 in an auto accident. She was a passenger in a car travelling from Utah to Washington when the car hit black ice and lost control. Maggie was in the backseat asleep and was ejected from the window just as the car rolled up an embankment, pinning her underneath. She received a spinal cord injury leaving her paralyzed below the waist. Maggie is in ProjectWalk, a spinal cord injury recovery center, learning how to walk again. Insurance does not cover the $2500/month recovery expenses at ProjectWalk.
CUUC hopes you will join us in the Maggie Anderson Fundraising Project to help cover the expenses for Maggie's continued recovery. A campaign has been established with the Spinal Cord Injury Program of the National Transplant Assistance Fund (NTAF). Your tax-deductible contribution can be sent to CUUC at PO Box 3166, Pasco, WA 99302 (please write "Maggie Anderson" on the memo line of your check), or contributions can be made through the NTAF website at http://www.transplantfund.org/Restricted/patient-detail.cfm?pat_id=1151.
